Being Quiet

September 1, 2007

How are you in the presence of the wicked. I do not mean the truly wicked like killers, murders, etc. I mean the person that you work with that maybe tells an off color joke, wants you to cheat on an expense report, you know, the stuff that all sorts of people will do because no one will catch them. King David had that problem one time, and he tried to deal with it like a lot of us today do.

Psalm 39 (NLT)

For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of David.
1 I said to myself, "I will watch what I do
and not sin in what I say.
I will hold my tongue
when the ungodly are around me."
2 But as I stood there in silence—
not even speaking of good things—
the turmoil within me grew worse.
3 The more I thought about it,
the hotter I got,
igniting a fire of words:

As a true Christian, works that the Lord would not want you to get involved with should not be participated in. But even if you are in the presence of them, you can not keep quiet about them. Years ago, I had a boss who wanted me to go out with the 'guys' and have a few beers. I never have had a drink, not for my Christian beliefs, but because my father was an alcoholic . I made the decision to say no. I would not even enter the bar to have a coke because as a Christian I did not feel comfortable in the bar. I was told that if I not become a team player (by joining the guys), I would get a bad review. I would not stay silent about it and I said no. I faced the bad review and was later laid off by the company.

What about you? Do you stand up for God, or do you remain silent? What would God have you do?
