Food

The life of Jesus. Read Today: Disciples question Jesus; John 4:27-38

This was supposed to be written on Superbowl Sunday but I got a day or two behind (again). Superbowl is a unique American Holiday centered around a religion called Football (or for those outside the US - American Football - not soccer as we call it).

One of the things that we do so well on that one Sunday each year is eat. Churches in my area see it as a chance to bring people in, feed them and tell them about Jesus while watching the game.

The thing about food is it makes you hungry. Jesus once made a bold statement about eating when His disciples urged Him to eat.

John 4:32 ESV
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

He did not have food. He had sent the disciples to get some. The food that he refers to is the salvation of souls. For Jesus, leading people to know about God was more important than food.

Next time you may have a big sporting event, don't waste it. Bring people in, feed them, and then tell them about God.

Read for tomorrow: Samaritans come to Jesus 4:39-42

The Biblical Superbowl

February 3, 2008

Today in the United States of America, we celebrate Superbowl Sunday. The two best teams from the NFL will tough it out on the football field to see who is the best. Both teams have supporters who know they are going to win. Only one can be the winner (and we all know it will be New England Patriots defeating the New York Giants).

Years ago, a Superbowl of sorts took place. It was a rag-tag team of Israelites versus the gigantic Egyptian army. As we have today, both sides had supporters. Egypt had Pharaoh who knew right was on his side. It looked like there was going to be a fumble and the Israelites would go down in defeat. But one man had faith.

Exodus 14:13-14 (Amplified Bible)

13Moses told the people, Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians you have seen today you shall never see again.

14The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.

Moses had faith. He was not sure what was going to happen but he knew God was in control.

As we watch the game today with family and friend, know that there is a much more important going on then the game you are watching. Know there is a battle going on between Satan and God. We may not know what God is going to do, but if we act like Moses, we know He will pull us through if we put our trust in Him.

Read through the Bible in historical order in one year.
