Asleep in church

December 12, 2008

Act 20:9 ESV
(9) And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.

Poor Eutychus, he is pointed at as what will happen when you sleep in church and made fun of. But what happens next is as important as what happened.

Act 20:10-12 ESV
(10) But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."
(11) And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed.
(12) And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.

The problem is not what we see here. We should be looking at what Eutychus means to us in today's life. We the church are often asleep at the switch and need to be woken up. There is a song that tells about people that are dying and we are in our churches not even caring if they know Jesus.
Let us be like Paul who breathed life back into these people. May Gd breathe life back into us again so that we can care for others.
