May 3, 2007 - Punishment

May 3, 2007

Col 3:25 CEV
(25) But Christ has no favorites! He will punish evil people, just as they deserve.

I read a sad news story today. A woman gave birth to a child in a bath tub and then proceeded to drown the child. She wrapped it in a plastic bag and then put her other children in the car, drove to a trash receptacle and threw the newborn out. The reason she did all this, her husband had a vasectomy seven years before. She was covering up her sin.

What she did was no different than what David did to Uriah the Hittite when he stole Bathsheba. Someone else paid to cover up a sin. Someone who was Innocent in the matter. When we read about it in the Bible, it is a story. When we hear about it in real life, we shake our heads about the tragedy.

It made me sick to read that story. I wanted to say, put that woman in jail and throw away the key. Then I thought about what David did. I thought about how he was able to redeem himself before God. God is a loving God. David did get punished. They lost the child. Later, because he was a King of War, David was not allowed to build the temple. How much of that 'war' was because of the death of Uriah? I do not know. I do know this. God has no favorites. Punishment will come. It came for David, it will come for that woman as well. We get what we deserve. Even as Christians, punishment will come. (More tomorrow)
