Who fights your battles?

June 30, 2008

2 Chronicles 20:15 KJV
(15) And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

The Bible is littered with people who try to help God. From Eve trying to be like God so He would not have to tell her right from wrong, to the man killed when trying to stop the Ark of God from falling and many more. We cannot help God. We can only sit back and watch what he can do. But so often we try to fix things we thing He has messed up. Thankfully we have the story of one who did not try to help God. Jehoshaphat knew he could not fix the problem of the people who were coming to attack Judah so he tried a real unique approach. Till now, people had called other kings, tried to bargain with the invaders and some even prayed to other Gods. This man had a unique plan.

He called the people together and told God what the problem was. God already knew the problem I am sure. But when Jehoshaphat got out of the way by letting God know he needed help, God stepped in. And the prophets gave the quote that we all know.. 'the battle is not yours but God's'.

The battle is never ours. As long as we try to do it in our strength we will never succeed. Only when we give it to God will there be a resolution. In this story we are reading, it was a total destruction of the army. They all died, and it took 3 days to gather the spoils of the war.

So, who is fighting your battles?
