Proverbs 4:23 The Scriptures 1998+
(23) Watch over your heart with all diligence, For out of it are the sources of life.
What is your heart? Does it refer here to the organ that pumps blood in your body and keep you alive. While it is true that you should take care of your heart it is most likely not what Solomon is trying to tell us here.
In looking at the Hebrew meaning of the word I found: the heart; also used (figuratively) very widely for the feelings, the will and even the intellect; likewise for the centre of anything. In other word, it is what we are, what we think, our very existence.
It is important to keep this guarded well. It is too easy to get tempted by things that will be good for a season but are unhealthy for us in the long run. Giving in to these things, the scripture tells us, is to damage the source of our life. For example, if I drank, while the drink might make me feel good for a while, I will soon have to wake up to the consequences of my actions and what they do to those around us.
Guard your heart well.
