Freedom Decision

July 4, 2009

The life of Jesus. Read Today: Bread of Life discourse; John 6:22-7:1

Here in the United States of America we celebrate today at Independence Day. In 1776 the people of this country decided to go to war to secure their freedom. In Jesus day, the disciples were faced with a choice for their freedom as well.

Jesus talked about how He was the bread of life and how the people that were to come to Him must eat His flesh and drink His blood. They did not fully understand the symbolism He was trying to convey and they got angry at Him. Just like people today, when they do not understand something, especially when they get angry they all walked away. And all that was left was the disciples.

John 6:66-69 ESV
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Just like the disciples, we can come to choose what we want to follow. We can get angry at God and walk away from Him, or we can embrace the confusion, knowing that He will make it all clear in the end. The disciples had it right. Which way will you go?

Read for tomorrow:
Traditions of men rebuked; Matthew 15:1-11; Mark 7:1-16
