Vengence

December 10, 2008

Rom 12:19 ESV
(19) Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

When ever I read this verse I chuckle. Years ago I worked at a college computer lab. I helped students with assignments and maintained the computers. One day a student came in that did not have a clue as to what she was doing. It was back in DOS days and the intro computer class all students had to take had a lab that was half using a word processing program and half learning quick basic. She opened up her basic program in the word processor and tried to run it. When she could not figure it out she called me over. Looking at the comments in the program (that were there to let teachers know who wrote it), I could see it was not written by her unless she was Ralph. Knowing there was a bit of cheating going on here I asked her what program she used to type it in. She told me in language I could not repeat here, and very loud, what she thought of the college, the class, and me, and that needed to get my (bleep) over there and help her.

Several eyes were on me. I did not tell everyone I was a Christian, but I did not hide it either and there were people wondering how I would react now that the slap had been made. Would I turn the other cheek. I took a deep breath. Inside me I heard 'Vengeance is mine says the Lord'. I quietly helped her finish her cheating. If that was the end of the story it would be incomplete. I mean, how did God take care of it? God does, plain and simple. See, the student went into the classroom. The instructor looked at the cheating and called her on it. She tried the same bullying on her that she did on me. Teacher called campus police to escort her out of the classroom, and she was not allowed to return. She flunked the class.

Whenever I want to try to get my own way, God will sometimes prop that image into my mind. God does take care of things. People do pay for what they have done.
