Politics made easy

May 9, 2008

In our journey through the Bible, we have to go back a little bit in the devotions. If you remember, there was a case where Jonathan, Saul's son made a covenant with David. What was Jonathan's was David's and what was David's was Jonathan's. Furthermore, this led to their families as well. David had avoided as much as he could fighting one of Saul's other sons but eventually the fight was done and Israel became united under David. Now many years have past and David remembers his vow to Jonathan.

2 Samuel 9:1 BBE
(1) And David said, Is there still anyone of Saul's family living, so that I may be a friend to him, because of Jonathan?

This was political suicide. Saul was recognized as the King, and if David acknowledged any one as his descendant, they would have a legitimate claim on the kingdom.

But taking a vow, making a promise is also important. And even though it could cost him the kingdom, David knew that he had to do the right thing.

As we approach this election year in the United States, we are hearing a lot of promises from the candidates. Maybe it is time to pray for a man to run the country the way that David ran his kingdom and his life.
