Security
June 15, 2007
So often we can feel so secure in what can do for ourselves. We may be able to get great wealth, a good job, great friends, a nice house. All those things we seem to have gotten for ourselves. Obadiah faced this same problem when he spoke to the people of Edom.
Oba 1:3 NET
(3) Your presumptuous heart12 has deceived you —
you who reside in the safety of the rocky cliffs,13
whose home is high in the mountains.14
You think to yourself,15
'No one can16 bring me down to the ground!'17
The people of Edom lived in the mountain areas. They had set themselves and there cities up high where they could see the enemy approaching. By the time they got close the people had their defenses already set and could stop them. They thought that no one could take them down. They were wrong.
Oba 1:4 NET
(4) Even if you were to soar high like an eagle,18
even if you19 were to make your nest among the stars,
I can bring you down even from there!" says the LORD.
Pride is a sin. When we think that we are the ones that can do it all, we are wrong. Now understand, these people were direct descendants of Essu, Jacob's brother. They were not the children of the promise, but they did not have to live in such arrogance either.
In the end, when you sin, God can forgive, but stay in that sin, and live in it, then know that God can call you up short on it.
