Teach your children well.....

June 23, 2008

1 Kings 12:16 Webster
(16) So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thy own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

Solomon had passed on and his son Rehoboam takes his place. What did he learn from his dad? Obviously nothing. His dad was too busy with seeking pleasure and seeking wisdom (see the book of Ecclesiastes), to have taughtRehoboam much. And it shows in what happened when he young lad took over as king. His dad had been mean to the people of the kingdom but when seeking advice from hiscouncilors, he listen to the young rebels rather than the older wiser men. He made their work harder and they rebelled. That is where we get today's verse. The people separate and form another kingdom. In the end it was prophecies by God's prophets, but still he had a chance to change it.

What do we teach our children? Will they seek the wisdom of the wise when they get older, or will they follow the young guns advice?
