The meaning of life is not 42

June 19,2008

Ecclesiastes can be a very depressing book to read sometimes. Many would like to skip over it. Why would we want to read how meaningless our life is. The teacher cannot seem to find pleasure in anything. He cannot find it in money, possessions, education, drinking, well you name it. But in the middle of it all, today's verse comes up. The meaning of our life is very plain.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (WEB)

18 Behold, that which I have seen to be good and proper is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor, in which he labors under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion.

19 Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.

20 For he shall not often reflect on the days of his life; because God occupies him with the joy of his heart.

We can focus on all the negative things in life, many people will tell you that is what the book is all about. We can learn however the secret to having meaning in all those things. The secret is God.

Do you use what God has provided you to glorify God, or do you use it for things that cannot bring glory to God? How about the skills that you have? Do you use them for good, or to waste them away?

Look at your life and reflect on what you have and what you are doing with it.

Today

Ecclesiastes 1:1-6:12
